Morning Sports Talk With Kate & Zach
Speaker 1Oh my, the Gators have won the ball game. Green's tomorrow Touchdown. Lebron stands alone. The Cameroon Bay.
Speaker 2Lightning win their second straight Stanley Cup. The sports you lost to him, hey, way down top hey.
Speaker 3This is the Morning Sports Take with Kate Thomas and Zach Schroeder.
Speaker 4All right, good Wednesday morning everybody. This is Fox Sports, Pensacola. The morning sports. Take Zach Schroeder, kate Thomas and Jim Cagle.
Speaker 5Good morning.
Speaker 4This Wednesday morning, a very eventful Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, when it comes to college baseball, it's bittersweet FSU taking care of North Carolina in a huge win 9-5. We'll hear from FSU's head coach Link. Jarrett shortly later on in the show Kentucky Florida postponed. I say unfortunately, because Kentucky will play Florida today at 10, but then the winner of that game has to play Texas A&M that afternoon. Or is it the loser of that game? It's the loser of that game. I would think it's the loser.
Speaker 5Yes, the loser.
Speaker 4The loser of Kentucky and Florida has to play Texas A&M this afternoon at 6.
Speaker 5I hope Kentucky loses because I want to see Kentucky-Texas A&M again.
Speaker 4Yeah, I don't like this, because shouldn't the Texas A&M game be tomorrow? It's not their fault, it got postponed due to weather.
Speaker 5This is what I was wondering, and the weather did look like, because I watched the entire FSU game, which was incredible and we'll get into later but the weather during that game it was sunny for most of the game, I did see. Towards the end of the game it did look like the skies sort of started to darken, but I was like, well, it's also the Stanley Cup Finals tonight. That has the Florida Panthers in it, so are they doing this so they can get more viewership from Florida fans tomorrow? That was what I was wondering. Or is the weather really that bad?
Speaker 4That's a good possibility. I don't know if the weather was that bad.
Speaker 5I just didn't feel like the weather and I haven't looked at all the weather and totally dove into it. But the weather outside is weather. That's right.
Speaker 4Yeah, it's just, it's weather, it's weather, it's just weather.
Speaker 5Like usually you don't postpone a baseball game until it's like torrential downpour. They can't get the tarp over the dirt and all this, you know, just over the diamond and I don't know. I haven't ever seen, especially in the College World Series, and maybe we could do some research. Maybe Jim or one of our listeners could tell us the last time a game was postponed, because it's not often in the College World Series.
Speaker 4And what's weird is the weather must be nationwide or something, because the Rays-Minnesota Twins game got postponed too. Now they did finish it last night at like 11 o'clock.
Speaker 5Right.
Speaker 4But yeah, that game was almost four hours. It was crazy.
Speaker 5And in the past usually they'll let the games at least start and then they'll postpone it in the middle, and maybe they wanted to avoid something like that because it is the College World Series. But I'll never forget a Super Regionals at LSU and I know that's not the College World Series, but it's what you go to. Before we were there until 3, 4 am as sportscasters covering LSU in the wee hours of the morning because of a torrential downpour and the game had to stop in between and all of this stuff. And I remember specifically a Wahoos game last year I did this at. So in baseball I feel like they'll pretty much play, unless stuff's really getting crazy with the weather.
Speaker 4That's just my opinion, but maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. We did have a text come through. Somebody recommended maybe the heat index was the issue, but I don't think that was it. It's a good thought. That is a good thought I did look it up and it said weather and I only assume that could be heat. It very well could be.
Speaker 5It could be. It didn't really break it down for me. Jimmy, you should really play it. The weather outside is weather. Yeah, that was a good one, Jim Thanks.
Speaker 4Alright, Zach, get back to it. Yeah, very unfortunate there for Florida. They will take on Kentucky this morning 10 o'clock, so we'll be locked into that game. I guess we're watching baseball at the office today, right? Is that what's going on?
Speaker 5I've been watching so much baseball. I want to say I'm baseballed out, but I'm not, because this college world series has just been so incredible, and not only the college world series. You mentioned the Rays, then Wahoos. I don't know if you did have a chance to go to that last night or not, but just I lied?
Speaker 4no, I didn it, you know.
Speaker 5but it's just baseball seems like this year it's more fun.
Speaker 4Something about it.
Speaker 5There's an energy there, there's energy.
Speaker 4I think it stems from the MLB. All of the. The rule changes, yes, the rule changing, just people getting in fights more often now.
Speaker 5Yeah.
Speaker 4You caught on to that earlier.
Speaker 5I did A few weeks ago. I like it. It reminds me of hockey.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 5Which we'll also get into today.
Speaker 4The injuries. Just there's bigger names in baseball this season.
Speaker 5Well, speaking of big names, go ahead, finish that thought.
Speaker 4And I think social media and just every form of media has really started to push baseball more.
Speaker 5It has it has.
Speaker 4People are starting to see more of the highlights and hear more of the cheering and excitement involved with MLB and minor league and college baseball, and it's starting to capture a larger audience of fans. It really is. What were you going to say?
Speaker 5I was going to say and you make a great point and I think social media has a huge part to do with it, so I agree with you, zach, on that point that you just made. I wanted to say gotta give a shout out. And today we will be remembering the great Willie Mays. Yes, we will be remembering him. When you talk about baseball, and one of the greats, he's one of those names that always comes to thought. Right. So he passed away. Our thoughts, prayers, all that go out to him and his family, but just really remembering the great baseball player and person that he was today as well.
Speaker 4Yeah, very sad. I heard that during the I was watching the Stanley Cup Finals and that just happened during the middle of the game. Crazy, so many big names passing away Bill Walton just a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 7Last week.
Speaker 4Jerry West the logo Mr Logo. Then Willie Mays this week we're getting old.
Speaker 5That's right, zach, we're getting old.
Speaker 12You're getting old, I know Crazy.
Speaker 5He grows an inch taller every day. Yep, there it is.
Speaker 4But thank you for pointing that out Absolutely, definitely thoughts and prayers out to Willie Mays' friends and family.
Speaker 5Well, also Jerry West and Bill Walton. You know, you just mentioned those three names. Goodness, wow, great. So much history.
Speaker 4Great so much history in just three names. I love it.
Speaker 5And now they're going to be watching over us and wondering what the heck all is going on in sports these days. Yeah, and I'm sure they would want nothing to do with social media. Any of those guys? Nothing.
Speaker 4Nothing, but that is college baseball. Touched on it a little bit Kentucky Florida today at 10. Tennessee FSU at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
Speaker 5Oh, that one gives me chills.
Speaker 4And then Texas A&M will be taking on the loser of Kentucky, Florida. That game will be at 6. That's a lot of baseball. Yeah, 10, 2, and 6. It's a full day of baseball. I like it.
Speaker 5I like it too.
Speaker 4I'll be tuned in All I like it too, I'll be tuned in all right. Some other action going on once again with baseball Tampa Bay Rays falling short to the Twins. We'll hear from Chris Adams Wall later on in the show about what happened there. Up at Target Field, the Phillies took care of the Padres four to three, the Marlins with a huge win last night. It took 10 innings but they got it done against the St Louis Cardinals 9-8.
Speaker 5I like that.
Speaker 4Yeah, the Marlins, they've been struggling. They're 2-8 in their last 10 games.
Speaker 5I don't like that.
Speaker 4No.
Speaker 5But I do like last night's win.
Speaker 4Yes, and when the Rays fell short to the Twins, Minnesota's a good team, you have to realize. They're on a six-game win streak and they're eight and two in their last 10 games.
Speaker 5That's great, so they're a hot team. Wow, yeah, they are hot, they're a hot team.
Speaker 4So be careful of the Minnesota Twins Cleveland Guardians. They fell short to the Seattle Mariners eight to five your Guardians.
Speaker 5they're on a three-game losing streak To the Mariners.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 5I didn't think Mariners were any good this season.
Speaker 4Well.
Speaker 5I think, again.
Speaker 4They're first in the American League West 44-31.
Speaker 5I guess I just wasn't thinking of Seattle.
Speaker 4Sorry any Seattle Mariners fans. Mariners are 8-2 in their last 10 games and on a four-game win streak.
Speaker 5Well then, whatever they're doing, Last year they weren't a good team.
Speaker 4Well look, they had Rodriguez.
Speaker 5That's pretty much it, yeah, well the Guardians yeah, getting to go to that spring training game the Guardians and the Cincinnati Reds was so cool this summer. That was such a cool experience. But the Guardians, I think, have a good team. They may just be going through some kind of little, I don't know.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 5Dip in the season.
Speaker 4The Yankees took on the Orioles. That's an incredible series here Orioles 47-25, the Yankees 51-24. Two of the best teams in baseball right now. The Yankees taking care of the Orioles yesterday 4-2. Yankees are 6-4 in their last 10 games, the Orioles 7-3.
Speaker 5So both of these teams. They're hot. And where's that game at in this?
Speaker 4series. What game was that? New York Up in Bronx?
Speaker 5Oh, I love the Yankees. You're a judge.
Speaker 4The Atlanta Braves are hosting the Detroit Tigers. So our other producer, Chris Bowen, he's a Tigers fan.
Speaker 5He is a Detroit fan. I gave a mess about that the other day, chris, if you're listening, we don't like Detroit over here.
Speaker 4I'm just kidding, we don't like Detroit over here I'm just kidding. You know what's crazy. I meet more and more Detroit fans and Washington fans every day.
Speaker 5Oh, there's a lot of Lions fans down here.
Speaker 4Oh yeah, in the past two weeks I've met four Washington Commanders fans.
Speaker 5The Commanders fans, yes, I wonder if it's because they're actually LSU fans, and so now they're trying to go for the Commanders for Jada Daniels.
Speaker 4Are they like true Commanders fans, true Commanders fans.
Speaker 5Really, but they are honestly, I feel like that's like very surprising.
Speaker 4It is yeah, because I ask them like I didn't even know any.
Speaker 5What do they think about calling them the Washington Commanders? Do they hate it?
Speaker 7Yeah.
Speaker 5Yeah, that's what I thought.
Speaker 4Yeah, they're still saying the other name. I might get in trouble if I say it.
Speaker 5Yeah, well.
Speaker 4Racism and all that I just liked.
Speaker 5Washington football team. I was down for that after I was like you know what? So basic, let's just go with it.
Speaker 4The.
Speaker 5Washington football team.
Speaker 4Honestly, let's just roll with it. I thought it was better.
Speaker 5I mean, I guess you have to have a mascot, but a little guy just dressed up as a football with little hands and arms coming out.
Speaker 4Or hands and legs.
Speaker 5That'd be hilarious.
Speaker 4No, it's so bad.
Speaker 8I think I like the commanders now. Yeah, let's go with the commanders.
Speaker 5At least it's not a baby cake. Let's be grateful for what we have.
Speaker 4No, but you mentioned Jaden Daniels. Honestly, it's a 50-50 split. Half of them are kind of nervous about Daniels. This is a tangent here, but it's okay.
Speaker 5I'd be a little nervous. I mean, I'm even an LSU fan.
Speaker 4It's just because we haven't seen him perform and he's skinny and lanky. He's really skinny.
Speaker 5But he's got the drive. He's not scared. We saw at LSU he's going to go up against the big men and he's not going to be scared about it, so I think that'll be good. I'm just worried about I haven't looked at his offensive line who's protecting him and how great that is.
Speaker 4I'm assuming it's not that great. Yeah, that's the problem.
Speaker 5And so because of that, I just worry for Daniels. Is he going to be a lot more injury prone? And to me, just thinking off the top of my head, he most likely is.
Speaker 4Oh yeah, he does have a good arm though.
Speaker 5He has a great arm. He's got a good arm and he can run, and don't let that deceive you.
Speaker 4Oh yeah, that's what he's known for.
Speaker 5Yeah, so I mean he's a dual threat guy In college. In college, in college.
Speaker 8Everybody's a split second faster.
Speaker 5Goodness. One of my friends who was a stunt person in New Orleans when it was Hollywood Louisiana, I think is what they called it, or whatever back when they were doing all the movies there. He said his scariest stunt was being a football player in a movie.
Speaker 5Oh wow, he had jumped out of cars, out of fires, off buildings, done just crazy things Shined some light on it, but the scariest thing that he ever did was play a football player and I was like, okay, well, that kind of actually puts a lot of things into perspective for me, at least as a woman, since I haven't been able to play. But look, we're going to dive a lot more into that, Zach. Anything else for us, Because I know we're coming up on a break.
Speaker 4Yeah, let's get to a break here and then, when we get back, let's discuss the Stanley Cup Finals, the Florida Panthers falling short to Edmonton. I've got a lot of thoughts about that game. The.
Speaker 5Florida Panthers trying to give me a heart attack all night long Basically did Probably the reason I didn't get to sleep well last night, man.
Speaker 4I feel you on that one.
Speaker 5We'll talk about it.
Speaker 4Yes, we will. We'll talk about Stanley Cup Finals, some baseball action and a whole lot more. Give us a couple of minutes, We'll be right back and I'm down with it.
Speaker 5Oh no, no, oh no, no, she's confident it's all the way she wants it. Oh oh oh. She said it's that fresh time. Take the show.

Speaker 4Tell you what. During the break, kate and I were talking about the Orlando Magic, something we have not touched on here since the offseason. But Wednesday is the draft, so we're going to start to turn our conversations. We're going to start shifting our attention to the Pelicans, the Magic and the NBA draft. What all is going on there.
Speaker 5I do have a topic today. I'm so excited about that.
Speaker 4There is a topic today about Bronny James and we'll get into that later on in the show. But we need to get to the Stanley Cup Finals action, the Florida Panthers falling short to the Edmonton Oilers 3-5. Edmonton stays alive, oh my gosh. We need to get to our play of the day. In game five of the Stanley Cup Finals, connor Brown gets the first goal of the night in the first period. But the impressive part it was an unassisted, shorthanded goal. Incredible goal by Connor Brown. Here is your play of the day, brought to you by Bogey's Golf Suites and Sports Bar.
Speaker 1Florida one for 13 on the power play in the stanley cup final and one for the last 17 overall. Good, stick up high by brown, shorthanded and alone. Connor brown scores for the second game in a row. Edmonton opens the scoring with a shorthanded goal.
Speaker 4That play of the day brought to you by Bogies Golf Suites and Sports Bar. An absolutely incredible goal by Connor Brown.
Speaker 5I want to cry. He slithered his way right by Bobrovsky. They made Bobrovsky look like an idiot last night.
Speaker 4You know they really did. He didn't seem like an elite goalie last night.
Speaker 5He didn't seem like he was in the game. Yeah, he seems like out of it, just like discombobulated, not in it. I don't know what Bob Roski that was. I hope it was just like a stand-in. That wasn't the real Bob Roski.
Speaker 8I have a little insight on the Bob Okay.
Speaker 4Before we get to my thought, I want to hear yours. I do too.
NHL STANLEY CUP FINAL SERIES EXCITEMENT AND ANALYSIS
Speaker 8That no one wanted to really talk about before this Bob showed himself. It's the streaky Bob and Paul Chestnut spoke on it and our afternoon guy does 5 o'clock here for you right home, paul Chestnut.
Speaker 2We love you. Paul, the Hall of Famer, the Pensacola.
Speaker 8Sports Hall of Famer, please, yes, all of those things. But yeah, he says there's a streaky side to Bob and he's been on a winning streak and he could possibly be on a losing streak.
Speaker 5No, no no, no, now is not the time Now's not the time, but I can see what Paul is saying. If is saying. If you want me to, they go back to Edmonton.
Speaker 8Edmonton wins game six. Then they come to Florida and it's a coin toss.
Speaker 2He still has Panthers.
Speaker 8Paul has had Panthers in seven to begin with. A lot to do with Streaky Bob.
Speaker 5I think it's going to seven. You know, I do.
Speaker 4So does Paul. I want it to go to seven. This is what I wanted for the NBA finals.
Speaker 5I actually want the Florida Panthers to put this one away. I really do. I was on the edge of my seat.
Speaker 5You played his goal, the first shot right there from the Stanley Cup. For some reason I had my TV on the wrong thing for like five minutes. I go to put it on the Stanley Cup final and there's already a goal. I'm like what is going on, it happens. And then there's another goal and you talked it was the short game. There was two of them. There was multiple of them in last night's game, at least two.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 5From Edmonton and then the Panthers try to get back in it. But I don't. The Panthers did not seem like the Panthers. They seemed still a lot better shaken up from their experience up in Edmonton.
Speaker 4Eight to one.
Speaker 5Eight to one Jeez, and I knew that that probably would do something to their confidence, right? Yes, however, in my own mind, I truly believed that this Florida Panther team was going to go back to Sunrise Florida, in front of all their fans right outside of Fort Lauderdale, and put on a show and take last night's game. I felt like that. And then the game. I turned it on a little late, like I said, and then I'm just watching Edmonton play and the passion and the fire and the teamwork, and then the game got really dirty there between the two for a while. Yeah, it did, which was awesome. I was like it did, which was awesome. I was like, all right, it was looking like street hockey in period two.
Speaker 8Yeah, so good.
Speaker 5Oh my gosh, I was like what is going on? How many shots? I will say this about the Panthers, Because at first I was getting mad, because I want to say game four they didn't have as many shots, but at say, game four they didn't have as many shots, but at least they were making a lot of shots and in that one run where it was looking real street hockey like that's, when they were just shooting just left and right, just doing whatever they could. So it was a great game and, wow, like way to go for the Oilers. I don't even like the Oilers, but they came out and they played their absolute best. They played like they were still in Edmonton. Now they all have to go back. Goodness, it's a 2,500-mile trip, isn't it? I want to say Something like that Jeez.
Speaker 5Even the broadcasters were talking about how tired they were.
Speaker 8Yeah, everybody wants a break.
Speaker 5I loved the one guy, a broadcaster, and I can't think of his name off the top of my head. He was wearing the all-pink suit and he at the beginning of the broadcast or beforehand, because I did watch all the opening broadcast and then somehow I like got I think my TV messed up but I had paused it and then I missed like half that portion. But he said you know, everybody else were picking Florida Panthers to win last night. But he said no, I'm standing strong. I said from the beginning I picked Edmonton Oilers in seven games and he said I'm going to continue with that. And then after second period, after he said that, I started to kind of be like I think this man knows what he's talking about, probably why he's doing the NHL Stanley Cup final broadcast.
Speaker 5but you know, yeah, maybe maybe this Edmonton Edmonton Oiler team does have a little something in the tank that we haven't seen.
Speaker 4And I'm glad to see Connor McDavid finally getting involved. Where has he been all series? Well?
Speaker 4he showed up last night that one play. When he was approaching the goal and two Florida Panthers were zoning in on him, honing in on him, he lifted his stick over their sticks and they were going for the puck. I'm probably not describing this very well, but it's his puck control is crazy to me. I was really watching him last night and that was when he got the assist for Zach Hyman on that second goal during the second period absolute insanity. There's so many of the days that could have been pulled from this game last night so many. I think you chose the right one with the first goal. I think so too.
Speaker 5And what you just mentioned there let me speak to this because this is what I did see the Edmonton Oilers do a really, really great job of in last night's contest was the puck control, and I know this actually, and what's great is because we do have our Pensacola Ice Flyers right here. I've had the chance to go and watch a lot of Ice Flyer practices and kind of the way those are handled now under the leadership of head coach Gary Graham, who is just a total stud of a coach. This is the way he coaches his team. He's coached at multiple levels. He's already brought a championship to the city of Pensacola and he's hardcore. Okay, he's a hardcore dude, and so I love watching them practice. They have a portion in their practice where they're going through a lot of puck control and then just making shots at the goal, but I never, I guess.
Speaker 5By watching them practice I realized and this is probably really stupid of me as a sports broadcaster, but I realized how important puck control is, especially in the game of hockey, and gaining control of that puck while you're approaching the goal right and the goalie, then, where you can make those good assists, like you just mentioned, Zach, and be able to score a goal. What I wanted to see more from the Panthers we talked about the street hockey. I felt like in that third period, I wanted to see them, yes, play aggressively like you're playing street hockey, but you still need to have some poise Poise with puck control, poise with assist and trying to get it to the right man and the puck in the right spot. If you're behind the goal, they used to call behind the goal, Gretzky's office. Okay. Yeah.
Speaker 5And then they'd get around and they'd come back and shoot it in. Get around and then come back and shoot it in when you know the Panthers. Just they don't. I don't know what is going on with the Panthers, and now they've got to get back on a plane and fly. And then the other thing I had to say about this where has Connor McDavid been?
Speaker 5He has been around during this postseason, because he is on his way to have 40 point scores in one postseason. I think he's got 38. So he's on his way, and the other three who hold that Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and then Connor McDavid right now with 38 points so far in a postseason, in a single postseason. So he has been doing some things.
Speaker 4Okay, some huge information in the NBA just dropping. But before we get to that, yes, I just want to see a competitive series. That's all I've been asking for. The UFL Championship a dud, nba Finals a dud Probably the biggest dud in NBA history. And then we have this, this series. It was looking like it was going to be a dud, but now it's a great series. Edmonton has finally brought the fight that we knew they had, and they've brought it finally.
Speaker 5I think they might be the better team now. I really do, after watching them compete last night and I think they're mad Skinner's a great goalie.
Speaker 4I know we give Bobrovsky a lot of credit, but Skinner really is a good goalie. He.
Speaker 5I know we give Bobrovsky a lot of credit, but Skinner really is a good goalie.
Speaker 4He is, he's a great goalie and they have arguably the best player in Connor McGavid, jim, do you agree with me there? Yeah, I mean. And Dreisaitl's incredible as well, and I'm with Kate, but Hyman, everybody.
Speaker 8I'm with Kate.
Speaker 5I don't like Edmonton, but from Canada. Nicest people in the world. But I feel like for some of those Canadians they think you know what Hockey's our sport. Now we're going down to Florida. We're going down to Florida, of all the places in the USA, to compete in the Stanley Cup finals. They're going to try to sweep us. Are you freaking, kidding me? No, no, we're going to take this series all the way. I kind of think that's what's going on.
Speaker 8It's now or never for Edmonton.
Speaker 5Right.
Speaker 4It really is All right. We need to get to a break. A huge signing in the NBA just happened. We're going to get to that and a whole lot more of NBA information when we come back in just a few minutes.
Speaker 17Tampa Bay Rays twice a week and only on the Fan Deep into left that baby's got a chance. It is gone.
Speaker 16Hi there, this is Ivan Struckel, owner of Frontier Motors. What sets Frontier Motors apart from the competition in Pensacola? Number one we've got 400 cars in stock in one location. Number two we unlock every single car every morning. Number three we give you a price list so you know exactly what we're asking for every single price. And the most important thing, number four we're the only dealership I know of that advertises an out-the-door price immediately. What that means we'll give you a discounted price.
NBA Coaching & Retirement Planning
Speaker 16Add the taxes, the title and the octopi, because most people want to shop. They want to go to different dealers to see if they're getting a good deal. Well, how do you do that? You've got to get an out-the-door price and it's like pulling teeth at some of these dealers to get an out-the-door price At Frontier Motors and see who's got the better deal. Now, we wouldn't offer that if we didn't think we had the better deal. And if our price isn't less, we're going to have a car with more equipment, less miles or in better condition. That's Frontier Motors at 230 Beverly Parkway, the home of free advice. Are you confident?

Speaker 3This is the Morning Sports Take with Kate Thomas and Zach Schroeder.
Speaker 4Good Wednesday morning. This is Fox Sports Pensacola, the morning sports take. I'm Zach Schroeder, kate Thomas and Jim Cagle. This is turning out to be quite an eventful sports morning. A whole lot of NBA information going down. I mentioned a huge signing. That signing is the Pacers giving Pascal Siakam a four-year $189.5 million contract to return to Indianapolis.
Speaker 5What's that number?
Speaker 4again $189.5 million. I'm not sure there's no guaranteed money involved in this update, but regardless, pacers land Siakam, which is huge. That's a lot of money to keep an aging Siakam who's currently 30. This will keep him there till he's 34 and then I expect he could retire, or maybe he could one more. That's great for.
Speaker 5Siakam at that age. Uh, a couple of years ago I think he was looking at something that was only around 42 million. So that's a huge bump and increase in salary for Siakam and 30, I don't know. I think you're beginning to age in the NBA you have. What do you? What would y'all say? Because a lot of people it seems like 27, 28, 29 are some of the prime ages, Maybe even 30. You could still be in your prime in the NBA, Do you think, or no?
Speaker 4Possibly. I'd say 26, 7. Like Anthony Edwards, right, he's not 27.
Speaker 5But I don't even think Anthony Edwards has hit his prime yet for basketball. That's what.
Speaker 4I'm saying so when he gets to that age, give him a year or two. He'll be in his prime.
Speaker 5But he'll be making more money than Siakam then, just because of what he's done in his career so far for Anthony Edwards. But yeah, breaking news, Great job for Siakam.
Speaker 4We're not done, though, with the information. Another in the same break, some more information coming down. Detroit Pistons head coach, former head coach Montu Williams he leaves, he's gone. The Pistons dismiss head coach Montu Williams, who leaves with a five-year $65 million left on his deal. They signed him for six years and they kept him for one. What?
Speaker 5do you say Well, I guess those long-term contracts don't mean anything. So when the Lakers say they're going to hire a coach for a long-term contract, we mean anything. So when the lakers say they're gonna hire a coach for a long-term contract, we'll see how that all plays out too, if you play as poorly as they did, then yeah, one year makes a little sense yeah because I think they were terrible.
Speaker 8Right, I could be wrong. They may have done well at the end of the year, but it was not a good year I don't remember hearing a word about the detroitistons this past season.
Speaker 4Well, the only thing I remember hearing is when they snapped their 26 or 7 game losing streak. That's the only piece or update I heard from them.
Speaker 8That's a bad harbinger for you to keep your job.
Speaker 5That's just a terrible job he did then. I mean not even in a year.
Speaker 4They had a 14 and 68 record this season. That's pretty much the exact opposite of the Celtics 64-18.
Speaker 5That's brutal. What was their record this season before he came? Do you have that? Because I'd love to know if it's one of those things where you're bringing a coach in.
Speaker 4They were 17-65, so they actually got worse.
Speaker 5They got worse.
Speaker 4Three games worse.
Speaker 5Well then I think probably at that point, if you get three games worse, you may have to do something about it. I mean and we spoke about this a little bit you mentioned social media today. Yesterday I mentioned how I feel like a lot of fans these days want instant gratification from their teams or organizations that they follow to be a winning team again. So to take a team like the Detroit Pistons, who have not been that great within the last few years, then you bring this head coach in. Is he going to be your answer. But if you have a worse record than the year prior, I think they probably are making the right move. And who knows?
Speaker 4Only by three games, though.
Speaker 8I don't care, I mean goodness, I think if he improved the winning by three games, though I don't care. I mean goodness. I think if he improved the winning by three, he would still be in trouble of losing his job Probably. That is not enough.
Speaker 5But it seems like it's— but I don't know. I think it goes further than the record, though I'm sure it was. How were the relationships and what was he doing? Because a lot of times when you see teams like this, it's a culture problem or a front office type leadership all the way up at the top problem. So for me, I think there's something else going on within that organization. Either he couldn't get his players to buy in or whatever he was preaching to the team and to the organization they weren't buying in either. He may have done a great job selling himself to get that job, but when push came to shove and he got the job, he wasn't able to get it done. So I'm sure it had a lot to do with that. Will he still be a coach in the NBA? Do you see him going?
Speaker 4anywhere else. Yes, absolutely, monte Williams.
Speaker 5As a head coach or as an assistant?
Speaker 4Sure, actually, I see the Lakers actually interviewing him Really as an assistant.
Speaker 5Sure, actually, I see the Lakers actually interviewing him.
Speaker 4Really yeah, for sure, this is a good topic for the listeners to chime in to. I think yes, jimbo text line please.
Speaker 8Yeah, the 24-hour text line 850-790-5010, 850-790-5010. You have the voice for it.
Speaker 4That's why I pass it on to you. I know the number.
Speaker 5Chime, chime in, because this is what I want to know. Where, as a listener, where would you like to see monty williams go next, and do you see him as a head coach, and a head coach where?
Speaker 8some fans of other teams might like to see him stay there. Yeah, I would like, possibly where they would like I'm sure they would kate.
Speaker 4You're on to something, though, with the relationships. That's what it has to be, because you look at the roster their top player is is Cade Cunningham, who, I mean? Do you really get excited about Cade Cunningham?
Speaker 5No, there's not much I get excited about.
Speaker 4Well, that's on you.
Speaker 5I don't know how to help that, I'm just kidding. I'm kidding. No, I get excited about a lot of stuff, the rest of their roster.
Speaker 4I mean Jaden Ivey, asar Thompson, jay jaylen duran, simone fontechia I don't even know who this guy is isaiah stewart they don't have a good roster. So what do you expect monty williams to do with these types of players now?
Speaker 5kade develop them. I'm not.
Speaker 4That's what I expect yeah, I'm knocking kate a little bit. He's a good player, but it has to be relationship based, because this roster is just not good, plain and simple. This is a 15-win roster that we're looking at right here and it translates I mean 17 wins last year, 14 the year before. So brutal. There's no star on that roster. This is what I'll say.
Speaker 5But when you're a coach, you come in, you're taking over a team who only won 17 games the season prior.
Speaker 4Yep.
Speaker 5Then you can only win 14 games.
Coaching Opportunities and NBA Analysis
Speaker 5You've got it seems like because I haven't really heard of any of these names or they're either a lot younger guys or it's a mix of some free agents and some guys that just it sounds like you've got a group of guys that truly need a coach who is going to be guess what a coach and develop your guys, teach them, help them break their bad habits, Teach them new good habits, right Develop into the star player that you can be. I forgot I was watching Allen Iverson's Hall of Fame speech the other day, just because this is what I do at my off time, and he spoke to each one of his coaches at each different level and even spoke about different teammates. Do you know for Allen Iverson, a guy? He played college ball with a walk-on, taught him the crossover.
Speaker 8Amazing.
Speaker 4That's cool.
Speaker 5What he became known for a walk-on.
Speaker 5He said this walk-on guy, they would be practicing and he would do this move on him all the time and he was like what is that move, man? You just got to show me. Will you just teach it to me? So the guy teaches it to him and he said ever since then he was just on fire as a basketball player. But he just spoke to each one of his coaches and spoke to how each coach had a different impact on him as a player throughout his career. And some of the impacts that coaches have to have on you is who are you as an athlete? What is your role on the court Right? What play to your strengths? We hear that a lot. So what are your strengths? A coach who can see those things in you and help bring those things out in you as an athlete. That's when you really start to shine.
Speaker 4This is a great opportunity, detroit Pistons. I mean it depends on how you look at it, but this is an incredible opportunity for a great coach to go there, build up the foundation of what you want your team to look like and start a new culture here for the Detroit Pistons. Well, it really is a great opportunity, but not what they just did with Monty and that what they just did, yeah, but he couldn't get it done.
Speaker 8You have to find someone who can but you think he's good, you think he's great, you think other people would want him, so. So if he's serviceable and you think he's good, how many other better coaches are there out there to go take this fancy little trip down, you know, to the coast or whatever, to go see Disney? I don't know. I want some no-name guy.
Speaker 5Well, and it's not going to be a no-name person, because it's going to be someone who's done something, but somebody who's just. You know, like you think of Joe Mazzulla. They highlighted his career the other day. I was watching and just he's had a crazy career. He was a really good player, but then he wasn't. He realized that being a professional athlete probably wasn't going to really work out long-term for him, right, yep. So then he goes coaching he's like even coaching for the G League team at one point and now he's the head coach of the NBA champions, the Boston Celtics, of one of the most historical basketball teams ever, in just a span of a few years, at 35 years old. They figured it out with Joe Mazzulla. Is there someone like that within the Lakers organization? I don't even know who their G League team is. Maybe there's someone like that. There's a lot of good coaches out there that are just undiscovered.
Speaker 8You've got to give them more than a year, though.
Speaker 5And you have to give them more than a year and we saw that, I think also with the Celtics, because Zach went through it yesterday. What did you start with since 2008? Yesterday?
Speaker 4Yeah, and we went all the way up till right now.
Speaker 5Right now 2024.
Speaker 8Yeah, so it takes longer than a year. It takes longer than a year.
Speaker 5And that's why I brought up the instant gratification thing. I think these days, in this world that we live in anybody any of us, even for me, I know if my computer doesn't pull something up in less than you know, just milliseconds, I'm like, oh my gosh, what's wrong? What's wrong with the computer, right, zach? I remember when there used to be an AOL dial up.
Speaker 8Wow, every time.
Speaker 5It took several minutes just to dial up. Boot up, like the Pelicans say.
Speaker 15Yikes.
Speaker 8Yeah. Then you type in the question and it's still seconds and seconds away. It's a different world.
Speaker 5And you're like what is you know? And so we are living in this instant gratification world and I think a lot of people, I even think that the ownership and that the front off, the GMs, and I think they're also on this instant gratification train. Yeah, it's all of us. It is, it's all of us. But I think what all of us need to do is take a step back and be like hey, great things, take time, preach, yeah.
Speaker 4Man, I don't even want to back that up.
Speaker 5You don't have to. Beautiful speech, thank you, beautiful speech. Thank you, I'll bow Look.
Speaker 4Monty's a great coach, though. I mean he had a great career, played for the Magic, the Nuggets, spurs, knicks, 76ers. He's been around the the league. He knows what it takes to be good in this league and also, as a coach, coached in the orleans pelicans and the hornets 2010 and 2010 to 2015. But he won coach of the year 2022 when he was coaching the phoenix suns wow, I mean, of course, that that team right there with kd and booker and you know they're gonna be good chris paul and then he was the all-star head coach 2022 that same year. So look, he's got, he's got some experience is what I'm trying to say? Sounds like it?
Speaker 4he will get a job he will get a job somewhere. He's still I mean, he's a good coach, just because it didn't work out with the crappy Detroit Pistons and maybe it was those younger guys that he was working with and I'm not trying to hate on any generation or anything, but maybe he just couldn't relate as much.
Speaker 5And if he does say interview with the Lakers and you've got LeBron and you've got some older veteran leadership, maybe that's more of a team that's more relatable to you. Because when I look at LeBron and say if Kyrie which I don't think he is but say somehow Kyrie gets over to the Lakers and then you've got LeBron and Kyrie and who knows what they do with Anthony Davis at this point I don't even know but whatever, then you maybe get Bronny James. I don't know. I'm just this is a completely hypothetical world.
Speaker 8I'm living in a fever dream yeah, a fever dream, but do you think?
Speaker 5in this dream that I'm having, that he would have success as head coach with some of those guys I just mentioned zach uh, those guys could have success without a head coach.
Speaker 4So that's true? I mean, that's true. A toddler could go in there and coach that team and they'd win a championship. How about, why not LeBron and Bronny go to Dallas and play with Luka, and Kyrie with Derek Lively?
Speaker 8All right, that's one side of a fever dream in the
Speaker 5other, isn't it? No, that fever dream gives me chills.
Speaker 4LeBron. Why does Kyrie have to go to LeBron? Why not LeBron take his talents to Dallas?
Speaker 5Well, he better take a talent somewhere and I better see something. Because I'm getting worried for LeBron Not that I should be worried for him, but you know how everybody's like oh LeBron's going to be the GOAT. I'm like the more LeBron stories in the game, the worse. He's kind of looking.
Speaker 9He's still elite. He's still elite.
Speaker 5He's still an elite player, he's still elite, but can you just go get another championship and then just bow out, because I feel like he needs to bow out on top.
Speaker 4Yeah, like Horford, al Horford. He won a championship and now the Celtics governor is saying he's going to return for his 18th season. Why Leave while you're on top of the mountain?
Speaker 5I mean, he did have a good season though.
Speaker 4Now Celtics have a great chance of running it back next year.
Speaker 5But still. Maybe it's a money thing, maybe I guess if you could play on the Boston Celtics for as long as you could play on that team for that? Organization I think you would. I think you would.
Speaker 4It's just because it's like yeah, have a chance at two, because this, yeah, this path was so easy for the Celtics this year.
Speaker 5Maybe next year. I saw when you spoke about the path. I came home yesterday and I watched the funniest meme about the path for the Celtics with just like little kids.
Speaker 2I'll have to show it to you later.
Speaker 5Did.
Speaker 4Zach write it.
Speaker 5Zach, it may have been his alter ego, that post. I'm just kidding. No, it was really funny, but it was, it seemed. After you went through. There were so many injuries. There was no Jimmy Butler, there was no Halliburton, there was no who else got injured.
Speaker 4Donovan Mitchell.
Speaker 5Donovan Mitchell, that's who I couldn't think of.
Speaker 4No, giannis in the East Giannis and Mitchell, that's who I couldn't think of. No Giannis in the East Giannis and no Dame for half the series there.
Speaker 8Goodness, I mean yeah, hey but look, guys, isn't it just a situation as well as, like everybody in the SEC, piling on Alabama when they've won so many in a row?
Speaker 4Whoa, now we're talking about football.
Speaker 8Well, I think it's the same, because you're saying that the competition was less, and that's what people say when there's greatness on a court, and then average to good to great.
Speaker 5No, I see what you're saying there. Well, look, I went and had the Boston Celtics back all day yesterday. I'll still have their back today. I just will say there was a lot of injuries leading up to those finals.
Speaker 4Paint the picture. You are a bandwagon fan, so that kind of discredits your.
Speaker 5And I'm not a bandwagon fan at all.
Speaker 4And you're a bandwagon hater Because I actually am a New Orleans Pelicans fan. You just said you're a Boston Celtics fan. What?
Speaker 5are you talking about? I'm a Boston Celtics fan for their organization.
Speaker 8I got that, I got to go for the New Orleans.
Speaker 4Pelicans, whatever. Okay, give me a straight answer. What fan of you. What fan of you.
Speaker 13Yeah, I don't even know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 4You got me like so discombobulated here. You're flustered. Who are you a fan of in the MLB One team right now? Give me an answer.
Speaker 5You can't say it, I can't do it, you can't say it Exactly the. Atlanta.
Speaker 4Braves Bandwagon fan right there?
Speaker 5No, it's not. It's the closest MLB team to where I am from.
Speaker 4All right, all right, all right, we got to go to a break. When we come back, some MLB action with the bandwagon fan and a whole lot more baseball action, we'll be right back.

Speaker 3This is the morning sports take. It's the best part of my day Sports, sports, sports, sports sports. All the kids are falling prey to me. Fox Sports Pentacola.
Speaker 5All right, welcome back to Fox Sports Pentacola. This is the Morning Sports. Take Kate Thomas, Zach Schroeder, Jim Jamon Cagle in the house. We've had a good time. I'm not a bandwagon fan these days.
Speaker 5Here we go getting all offensive, I'm just covering the teams that I care about, and one team, since we all live here in Florida, is the FSU Seminoles. Oh my gosh, I was doing the tomahawk chop last night in my, or yesterday during the day, in my living room. This game was so good. I think we've got some audio from FSU Knolls head coach Link Jarrett.
Speaker 11Let's go ahead and pull that up. Jim, great team across the field Did a great job this year in our league, won the league and they're a phenomenal team. So the quality of that team explains how well these guys executed today to win that game. On this stage they're dangerous. They have just a variety of arms out of the bullpen that they can use and we saw basically all of them and at this time of the year everybody's bullpen's been weathered a little bit, so I know that both sides those guys have delivered for them all season.
Speaker 5Oh my gosh, what an incredible soundbite, you know, and I love that he gave it up to Carolina right there. That game was so good.
Speaker 2I don't know.
Speaker 5I watched that game like from beginning to end, and North Carolina, I mean, everybody was just in it the entire time. You were basically on the edge of your seats. But FSU, what was it? The top of the ninth or the top of the eighth Going there with two back-to-back home runs?
Speaker 5It was incredible. Their batting cage and just everybody they have at bat is so good for FSU. Fsu came in ranked at number eight. I think North Carolina was seeded number four. They beat them again, so I loved to see it and then I was getting so stoked because I thought it was going to be Florida. But we've got that today at 10. Now I know we've also got a Rays report, so should we hear from Chris Adams-Wall?
Speaker 4Yes, we do. The Rays fell short 6-7 in the series opener against the Minnesota Twins up at Target Field last night. Chris Adams-Wall has today's Rays report on the loss to Minnesota.
Speaker 17The Rays and Twins got together for the series opener game one of three in Minnesota on Tuesday night and the Rays wasted little time in getting on the board and he swings and drives one deep to left field, went back toward the wall and gone Into the second deck for Randy Arrozarena and the Rays with three runs here, on the first on the home run by Randy. But the Twins would come back twice from 4-0 down at 6-4. It was 6-6 in the bottom of the night for Carlos Santana Swing and a little looper right center that's gonna drop base hit and will win the ball game for Minnesota.
Speaker 15Final score twin seven.
Speaker 17Rays. Six Rays will try to bounce back and gain two of three on Wednesday night at 740. With your Rays report, I'm Chris Adams.
Speaker 1Catch the Rays all season on the Rays Radio Network. For tickets, visit RaysBaseballcom.
Speaker 4A great game but the Rays could not get it done. They will be back in action this afternoon. 640, first pitch going out. The Rays are now 34-39 on the season and they're fifth in the American League East. We'll keep you updated with the Rays all season. Let's bring it down to the local level Pensacola playing Chattanooga. In that first game of the series they fell short too, 2-4. Andic bramer has today's wahoos update on the loss to chattanooga morning everybody.
Speaker 15This is blue wahoos broadcaster eric bramer with your wahoos update. Well, the all-important final week of the first half did not start well for the wahoos, who fell last night to the last place chattanooga lookouts by a score of four to two. Joe mack hit his team leading 10th home run early in the first inning, but the rest of the night was dominated by Chattanooga. Chase Petty had a good start and the Lookouts got a pair of two-run homers in the middle innings to cruise to the victory. The Wahoos got a bad break up in Birmingham as well. The Barons fell to the Montgomery Biscuits by a score of 6-5 in the nationally televised Rickwood Classic. So the Wahoos are a game and a half out of a playoff spot. With five to play, they'll hope to turn things around tonight. 6.05, first pitch. It is a Juneteenth celebration at the ballpark with a postgame fireworks show. We hope you can join us. Go to bluewahooscom slash radio to tune in to the live broadcast. This has been Eric Bramer with your Wahoos update.
Speaker 4Eric Bramer always doing a great job for us.
Speaker 4Thank you, eric, for the great work. Tonight, indiana Fever, kaitlin Clark will be playing the Washington Mystics. That game will be a 6 o'clock tip. We'll keep you updated on everything, kaitlin Clark. Tomorrow morning Tampa Bay Rays Minnesota I mentioned that tonight 640, first pitch going out. Philadelphia Phillies taking on the San Diego Padres Braves Tigers so much MLB action going on and we'll have it all right here for you tomorrow. Also, florida Gators good luck to you taking on the Kentucky Wildcats. This is Fox Sports, pensacola, the morning sports. Take. I'm Zach Schroeder, kate Thomas and Jim Cagle. Go have yourself a great afternoon and we'll see you tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock. Go have yourself a great afternoon and we'll see you tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock. Accurate sports information Fox.
Speaker 14Sports Pentacola. You're out, you're about, but you want your Dan Patrick. Well, good news, he goes everywhere with you.
